Here are five versions of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists: John Cale’s “Dying On The Vine.” In an alternate universe, I’m certain that I’ve successfully recorded a collection of covers featuring this song as the final track. But over on this side, I thought it might be interesting to juxtapose Cale’s original studio track to four live versions of increasing complexity: solo piano, band, string quartet and finally orchestra. I find it fascinating to watch the classically trained founding member of the Velvet Underground rethinking his work in terms of different sonic contexts and coloration.
